Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common inflammatory arthritis which leads to swelling and pain in many joints, often in a symmetric pattern. Early and effective therapy is essential to control symptoms and minimize joint damage.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect any organ in the body producing a myriad of symptoms and leading to its nickname as “the great masquerader”. This is often diagnosed in young women.
Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory form of arthritis typically seen in young men that affects the spine and large joints like hips and knees preferentially.
Polymyalgia rheumatica is a common inflammatory condition seen in older individuals. Presenting symptoms are aching and stiffness in the shoulder and hip girdles.
Polymyositis causes inflammation of large muscle groups with resultant weakness. Patients with this find it difficult to climb stairs, lift their arms overhead, or arise from a chair.
Raynaud’s phenomenon is a condition causing episodic cold induced color changes of the hands that may be associated with a number of rheumatic diseases.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis worldwide and affects many joints including the spine, hips, knees, and hands. Incidence increases with age. Often also called degenerative joint disease.
The vasculitides are a family of disorders causing inflammation and damage of blood vessels. Symptoms will reflect the location of vessels involved.
